When it comes to servicing your suspension fork lowers, it’s easy to assume you should stock up on foam rings in bulk. They’re small, inexpensive, and they sit right there under the dust seals, so why not grab a pile and keep them on hand?
The truth is, you probably don’t need to.

Foam Rings and Dust Seals work as a system
Foam rings sit beneath your fork’s dust seals and act as oil reservoirs. Their job is to stay saturated with suspension oil, keeping the stanchions lubricated and helping reduce friction. They also assist in trapping fine contaminants before they reach the bushings.
But here’s the key point: foam rings and dust seals wear out together.
If your foam rings are dirty, dry, or contaminated, it’s very likely your dust seals are too. Dust seals are the first line of defence against mud, grit, and water. When they begin to wear, they allow more contamination inside the fork which is exactly what causes foam rings to become clogged and degraded in the first place.
Replacing one without the other rarely makes sense.
Why dirty Foam Rings mean It’s time for new seals
Foam rings don’t typically fail on their own. They become discoloured and contaminated because dirt has made its way past the dust seals. Once that happens, the dust seal lip may be worn or hardened and the contamination (dirt usually) may already have made its way inside the lower legs. Once its inside, its likely there will be increased friction, and bushing/stanchion wear can accelerate.
If you simply replace the foam rings but reuse old dust seals, you’re leaving the root problem untouched. It’s like changing the oil but re-using a damaged oil filter.
Dust Seal kits already Include Foam Rings
Here’s the part many riders overlook: genuine lower leg service kits from brands like Fox Racing Shox and RockShox already include new foam rings.
When you purchase a proper dust seal kit, you’re getting:
-
Fresh dust seals
-
New foam rings
-
Crush washers
-
Travel Indicator ring
That means there’s no need to buy foam rings separately in bulk “just in case.” Every time you do a proper lower leg service with a new seal kit, you’re automatically replacing them.
When Would You Buy Foam Rings Separately?
There are very few scenarios where bulk foam rings make sense:
-
You’re running a high-volume workshop and performing frequent lower services
-
You’re rebuilding forks that are otherwise brand new but contaminated during shipping or storage
-
You’re experimenting with custom lubrication setups
For the average rider doing routine maintenance at recommended intervals, replacing seals and foam rings together is the correct approach.
Do It Once, Do It Right
Lower leg services are about restoring performance and protecting expensive components. Cutting corners by reusing old dust seals while installing new foam rings can lead to premature wear and inconsistent fork feel. If the foam rings are dirty enough to replace, the dust seals have already done their time. So, Instead of stocking up on bulk foam rings, invest in complete seal kits. You’ll get everything you need, ensure proper sealing performance, and maintain the plush, low-friction feel your suspension was designed to deliver.
Your fork and your wallet will thank you in the long run.
